To invest in a mutual fund in Bangladesh, verify your identity, add a nominee, connect your bank account, open or add a BO account, then choose a fund and invest through a SIP or a lump sum. You can do all of this online on Bini.
Before you start: Know what you're investing for
Start with the goal, not the fund. Ask yourself:
- What is this money for?
- How long can I leave it invested?
- How much can I put in?
- How would I feel if the value dropped 15% for a few months?
- Do I prefer investing monthly or all at once?
Money you'll need within a year or so generally shouldn't sit in a fund that swings a lot. Longer goals can handle more ups and downs.
Step 1: Verify your identity
On Bini, upload your NID and a photo. You only do this once and it works for every fund you invest in later.
Step 2: Add a nominee
A nominee is the person you choose to receive your investment if something happens to you. Add one so your family is protected.
Step 3: Connect your bank account
Connect your bank account so you can pay for your investments and get your money back when you sell.
Step 4: Open or add your BO account
A BO account, short for Beneficiary Owner's account, is where your units are held electronically. It sits within Bangladesh's securities depository system, run by the Central Depository Bangladesh Limited (CDBL) (opens in a new tab) and is normally opened through an authorised participant such as a broker or bank.
On Bini, you can open a new BO account or add an existing one inside the app, so there is no separate broker visit. After you invest, your units are transferred to your BO account within 14 working days. Talks are ongoing and soon you will be able to invest without a BO account as well.
Step 5: Choose a fund and invest
Browse mutual funds on Bini and go for an open-end fund. It is the global standard and has no fixed end date. It also works with a SIP and its price follows NAV. Whichever fund you consider, here is what to check:
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Investment objective | Tells you what the fund is trying to do |
| Asset allocation and top holdings | Shows where your money really goes |
| Risk level | Helps you match the fund to your comfort zone |
| Past performance record | Useful context, not a promise |
| Fund size | Affects how easily the fund can trade |
| Expense ratio | Costs reduce your return every year |
| Exit load | A charge if you sell within a set period after buying |
| Minimum investment | A SIP starts at ৳ 1,000 a month on most funds, others need more |
| AMC and fund manager | Look at the AMC's reputation and the people managing the fund |
| Fund structure | Open-end funds have no fixed end date and work with a SIP |
Don't pick a fund just because it had the highest return last year. A fund at the top of the chart can be near the bottom the next year.
Then choose how to invest. SIP is a fixed amount every month on a specific date and is good if you invest out of your salary. Lump sum is one larger investment and is good if you already have money set aside. Our SIP vs lump sum guide helps you decide.
After you invest: Track your investment
Your units are transferred to your BO account within 14 working days. CDBL manages all BO accounts so it holds the record of what you own.
In the Bini app you can see your units, average cost, total investment, NAV, market value and absolute return for each fund. Checking every quarter is plenty for a long-term goal. Daily NAV changes are mostly noise.
When you want to sell
Tap Sell units in the app. The whole process is digital and Bini takes care of the rest with the broker and the AMC. Your money usually reaches your bank account in 2 to 3 working days.
Common beginner mistakes
- Choosing a fund only because last year's return looked big
- Investing money you may need within months
- Ignoring the expense ratio and the exit load
- Stopping a SIP the first time the market falls
- Treating the NAV as a price tag, where a lower NAV means a better deal
How Bini helps
- Your personal RM. Finance Buddy (opens in a new tab) is Bini's AI assistant. Ask it anything about investing and it guides you from your first question to your first investment. You don't need to talk to anyone.
- BO account and SIP together. Both need the same details so you finish them in one smooth journey.
- Every AMC in one place. Invest in funds from different AMCs without a separate account and portal for each. Diversifying gets much easier.
- Easy tracking. Follow all your investments in the Bini app instead of checking each AMC's portal. Some AMCs don't even have one.
- Easier selling. Selling directly means collecting a form from the AMC and signing it. You send the paper copy to your broker and collect a second form from them for the AMC. On Bini the whole process is digital. Tap Sell units and we take care of the rest.
- Details once. Submit your information one time and start any SIP or lump sum in under a minute.
- One app for all your investments. As Bini adds more investment options you can track everything in the same place.
Frequently asked questions
Can beginners invest in mutual funds?
Yes. Start by understanding the fund's objective, risks and costs. Many beginners start with a small SIP.
How much money do I need?
On Bini, the minimum depends on the asset manager.
- SIP, ৳ 1,000 a month: EDGE, Ekush and CWT funds.
- SIP, ৳ 2,000 a month: VIPB and Midland funds. VIPB's two unit funds do not offer a SIP.
- Lump sum, 500 units (about ৳ 5,000 to ৳ 8,200): EDGE, Ekush, CWT and Midland funds.
- Lump sum, 1,000 units (about ৳ 11,300 to ৳ 14,000): VIPB funds.
Lump-sum minimums are set in units, not taka, so the amount in taka moves with each fund's price. Figures are as of October 2026, so check the fund page for the latest.
